When people go into the new year, often, the conversation is about new year’s resolutions. I’m not a big fan of new year’s resolutions, but I do have a couple of mindset shifts that I want to share today that you might like to carry with you through the holidays and into 2023. The first thing is share a story and then we’ll follow it by four different mindset shifts that you might choose one, two, or all of them to implement, and if you tuned in last week, you know there’s something extra special at the end of today’s episode. So first let’s get into this mindset story.

[00:00:00] When people go into the new year, often, the conversation is about new year’s resolutions.
[00:00:38] There was a group of elephants that was being held captive, and a passerbyer was confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held captive only by a rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages, it was obvious that the elephants could at any time break away from these ropes that they were tied to, but for some reason they did not.
[00:01:01] The passerbyer saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. Well, he said, when they’re very young and much smaller, we use the same size of rope to tie them. And at that age it’s enough to hold them. And as they grow, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe that the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.
[00:01:27] The passerbyer was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from the bonds, but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they are.
[00:01:38] Like the elephant. How many of us go through life, hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something simply because we failed at once.
[00:01:46] Or maybe we’ve tried something once and it didn’t work. So why should we try again? Your attempt may fail, but never fail to make an attempt once again. Today’s episode is all about mindset shifts and what’s going to help you in 2023. Do you want it to be a similar year to 2022? Or do you want to do something a little bit different? There’s no right answer, all I ask is that you consider if there’s something that you want, is the thing that’s holding you back a small rope that perhaps was tied on many years ago.
[00:02:21] So mindset shift number one: new year, clean slate.
[00:02:27] A lot of people talk about doing new year and adding all these extra things on. I want to be a little bit controversial and suggest to do the opposite. You can hit your goals by taking stuff off your plate instead of adding to it. I talk about this in next week’s email, which you can get on the list by clicking on the shownotes or going to my website, zenithjourney.com.
[00:02:49] I tried this clean slate method recently when cleaning out my wardrobe. So instead of taking out the things I didn’t wear or that didn’t fit, or I didn’t like. I took out everything and only added back in the things that I like and wore and fit well. And guess what. It had a completely different outcome.
[00:03:09] So instead of writing your to-do list and working out what you can delegate, try flipping it. Try starting with a clean slate and thinking what’s important? What’s meaningful? And then actioning from there.
[00:03:22] Mindset shift number two. Say it with me: boundaries. Last week’s episode was all about setting boundaries. Before you set boundaries, you need to decide what you want. Then the boundaries come.
[00:03:36] Most people that have trouble setting boundaries, it is because they don’t know what they want. And then they react to everybody else’s demands. So first follow mindset shift number one: clean the slate and then set your boundaries.
[00:03:50] Mindset shift number three: celebrate progress over perfection. If you’ve listened for a while, you’ll know I’m a recovering perfectionist. I can tell you, I have 13 programs outlined that have never been launched in relation to leadership, because I’m not happy with them because they’re not perfect.
[00:04:09] And you know what? It will never be perfect. This mindset shift is one I’m working on and maybe it rings true for you as well. What are you waiting for?
[00:04:19] Something else that fits into celebrate progress over perfection is working smarter, not harder. I’m a lot better talking than I am writing. And so I try that factor this into my work, wherever possible. Can I talk and send that to somebody to create the outlines for my emails? (Of which here’s a secret, that’s exactly what happens).
[00:04:42] And I also use the thought, if there was a simple way to do this, what would it look like? Such as a recurring shopping lists, recurring coffee orders, meeting agendas, rebooking meetings in advance, so you don’t need to do the calendar tango. Everything that you can do to work smarter, not harder helps future you do better.
[00:05:03] And the fourth mindset shift is: Where am I creating joy in my life?
[00:05:07] Two years ago, I did a reflection exercise, and I asked myself “if I could do one thing that brought me more joy, what would it be?” And the answer came so quickly. It was about music. Musicals are something that I have done on an off for ooh, 18 years. And it’s a little bit of a long story on why I had a five-year break.
[00:05:29] But I had a vertebral artery dissection and a mini stroke, and that impacted my ability to sing. So once I got over the idea that I could sing again I had to bring myself, well, maybe I should say it drag myself to an audition, (listen to the episode on self-sabotage if you want to hear about that story). And I started singing again.
[00:05:51] This small shift had such a great change to my life and brought this joy about that I forgot about. For you, it might be going to the beach once a month or having a weekend away each quarter or learning to Yodel or doing a pottery class. That spark of joy is contagious and good for you and people you interact with.
[00:06:12] At the moment, I am not doing a musical, but I do have some friends that came over every month or so for a sing around the piano. And that is just as joyful.
[00:06:20] So for mindset shift four, think, where am I creating joy in my life?
[00:06:25] If you’d like to have a go at doing something a little bit creative, why don’t you check out my Rockstar Visuals course. This is 10 minutes a day for seven days, and it teaches you how to do the visuals that I do in my monthly book summaries or my client workshops. You don’t need to be a creative person to do it, but it gives you a new way to think about creating content in a visual way and also a better way to remember things.
[00:06:52] You can go to campus.zenithjourney.com/rockstarvisuals, or jump into the show notes and click the link and see what it’s all about. So that is four different ways you can create mind shifts for 2023.
[00:07:08] And if you’ve been curious to hang to the end to find out what this secret thing is, the secret thing is it’s the silly season. And at the end I have a Christmas joke. Today’s joke is: who tells the best Christmas jokes. Reindeer, they sleigh every time. Thanks for listening tune in next week, where we talk about the “clean slate” method that I mentioned today. And in January, we’ll be talking about solo, hero and agencies. Thanks for listening.
